Time Travel: Cranbrook BC

There was something magical about the 1980s and 1990s in Canada, Captain Crunch was fighting the Soggies, Zeddy was always there to greet you when you were out shopping with your family and no Saturday was complete with an episode of the Racoons.

Maybe it's because I was born in the early 80s that I fondly look back on that time, but then again, maybe it's rad suit jackets, cool cars and big hair.

I want to take you on a trip today to Cranbrook BC, a little mill town in the Canadian Rocky Mountains where the 1980s might just have been brilliant.

This article has been kindly sponsored by McWhirter office Solutions, if you live in Cranbrook you probably know one of the owners, Jon and Alissa. Next time you see them out, make sure you say hello.

In 1987, Rick Hansen was on his was across Canada and made an appearance at The College Of the Rockies, known at the time as "The East Kootenay Community College", with a grand stand full of people and a cake made with 100+ eggs.

Walking the beat with Cranbrook's RCMP in 1985 gives you a look at the iconic Blue RCMP police cars with bright white doors, a glimpse of Baker Street (Check out the Waterbeds sign at 15:40!) and of course, some classic 80's fashion.

OMG, O M G, it's Auction time! Check out all these awesome auction items up for bid for the Kinsmen club of Cranbrook's live TV auction in 1989.

IN 1995 the Cranbrook Colts took on the Russian Selects U18 team and it was interesting, some vintage Shaw Cable coverage and Hudson Bay & Simpson Sears Suits to be had. Can't not mention the JOFA helmets either ;)

Russia 9 : Cranbrook 0 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks to the Retro Cranbrook Channel we're able to step back in time. Fun fact: Mike Turner from the Retro Cranbrook Channel worked at Channel 11 back in tha day and when Shaw bought out the station, they threw all these videos away.

Mike dumpster-dove to recover as many of them as he could and we should all be grateful for that. Together with Gord Clark they're working tirelessly to digitize and share these articles.

If you're looking for a better source of office supplies and furniture checkout McWhirter Office Solutions. When asked about an opportunity for an article about Cranbrook they were instantly keen and if you've been to a Cranbrook Bucks game lately you've surely seen their community involvement there too.
